What Most People Only Read About

An epidemic of deaths by prescription drug overdose, gang violence, white collar crime, terrorism preparedness and immigration.

Fortunately, most of us only read about these issues in the paper. But our February speaker deals with them every day.

Mike. Herring has been Richmond's top prosecutor for 10 years, and faces those kind of decisions right here in Richmond. On the first day of his first year on the job in 2006, he and his team were confronted with the gruesome home invasion murders of the Harvey family in South Richmond. In the years since, he has worked with city police on a strategy that contributed to a decline in violent crime in the city, investigated former Governor Bob McDonnell’s disclosure forms, worked with the Innocence Project to free two wrongfully convicted men, and reviewed 100 cases of a former narcotics officer who allegedly cut corners in obtaining search warrants.

One of Herring’s biggest challenges is what he terms "the all-important but long overdue" conversation about felony avoidance and the intersection of the criminal justice system, poverty and education. He noted in a recent public forum that a felony conviction for drug possession or for stealing something worth as little as $200 can wreck someone’s future by limiting their job opportunities and affecting their ability to get a job, rent an apartment or buy a home or car.
