Can I Still Sell Thin Mints?

"Can I Still Sell Thin Mints?"

Not many people experience the sudden and dramatic changes in their lives that Rep. Abigail Spanberger has seen in the last few months. We are going to learn more about what motivated those changes and what the impact has been when Abigail answers questions submitted by you at our next breakfast.

When she decided to run for Virginia's 7th District seat, she wondered if she would still have time to help her oldest daughter sell Thin Mints and Tagalongs for her girl scout troop. As a former CIA operative, she had spent most of her career under the radar, and being a public figure didn't appeal to her.

But after a multi-million dollar political campaign and seemingly endless TV and social media ads, Abigail Spanberger was perhaps one of the most recognizable people in the Richmond area.

And that was just the beginning of new experiences. In her first day on the job, she cast a vote in the election of the Speaker of the House and voted on several bills to try to end the government shutdown.

Abigail will have bagels with us on the 22nd and, just a week later, she will join fellow members of the House, Senators, Cabinet Secretaries, members of the Supreme Court, and the President and Vice President of the United States for the State of the Union Address.

But what about selling those Thin Mints? A couple of weeks after the election, she briefly wondered if it would be an ethics violation to sell cookies to her constituents. It's not, but she did have to face a question on the subject that might cost her votes in the future. In a Style Weekly article naming her "Richmonder of the Year", Abigail was asked to name her favorite girl scout cookie. (The answer is frozen Tagalongs and Thin Mints.)

How is that for your first days in a new job?
